Feast of Saint Vincent Martyr
Feast of Saint Vincent Martyr in Valencia.

Feast of Saint Vincent Martyr

On January 22 Valencians celebrate their Patron's Day. Vincent was a young deacon martyred in Valencia in the year 304 by order of the emperor Diocletian, which aroused great fervor among the population. He was named Patron of the City.

With the passage of time the events in honor of the Martyr expanded. In addition to being Patron of Valencia, San Vicente Mártir is also Patron of the Guild of Tailors and Dressmakers.

On the morning of January 22, the performance of dolçainers (flautists) precedes the celebration of a solemn mass in the Parish of San Vicente. At the end of the procession, a general procession dedicated to the Saint takes place that tours part of the places where, according to tradition, he received martyrdom.

On this date the baptism of San Vicente Ferrer, a great devotee of San Vicente Mártir, is also celebrated. This festival is organized by the Royal Association of the Baptismal Font of San Vicente Ferrer and begins each year with the display of the Sant Esteve bults. The companions are dressed in period costumes representing the characters who were at the baptism of San Vicente Ferrer: the priest, the sacristan, two jurors and the main juror, viceroy and vicereine, black man and woman, father, the mother with the child, the godmother and six other ladies. Lately other characters have been added.
