Cinema Jove
Valencia International Film Festival
The Festival Cinema Jove is an annual festival that takes place in June in Valencia. The Valencia International Film Festival, organized by the Institut Valencià de Cultura, is a meeting forum for young international filmmakers, and its aim is to show the best international cinema directed by young people focusing on new and innovative aspects linked to emerging cinema.
Its main venue is the Rialto Building, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Valencia. Screenings take place in the Berlanga Hall, the Rialto Hall, the Teatro Principal, the Centre del Carme, the Palau de Les Arts, Espai Turia, FNAC San Agustín and the Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània, these being the temporary venues of this film festival that has become a springboard for many promising young filmmakers.
Cinema Jove has five official competition sections:
- Feature films: Films lasting 60 minutes or more, not previously released in Spain and whose directors are no older than 40.
- Short films: Films lasting no more than 30 minutes, whose minimum requirement is their release in the Valencian Community and whose directors are no older than 40.
- Series: Competitive section, which includes round tables relating to the production of series.
- Audiovisual meeting for young people: National section for short films made by students from 5 to 25 years old. It consists of three categories:
- Children, up to 12 years old.
- Youth, from 13 to 20 years old.
- Amateur, from 16 to 25 years old.
- Òrbites: Competitive section that focuses on new languages and experimental narratives.
The parallel sections of the Cinema Jove festival, which are not in competition, deal with issues related to youth. Cinema Jove also has a section dedicated to Anime and two sections dedicated to the film industry. The festival awards the Luna de Valencia Prize to the best feature film, the best short film and the best series, as well as to a film director who has his own cinematic style in contemporary cinema, whose filmography is presented in a retrospective.
The following have participated in the festival: Alejandro Amenábar, Álex de la Iglesia, Icíar Bollaín, Matteo Garrone, Thomas Vinterberg, Stephen Frears, Miguel Albaladejo, etc.
Mostra de València - Cinema del Mediterrani
The Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani is a film festival that has been held in Valencia since 1980, usually in October/November.
The festival specialises in the cinematography of the Mediterranean basin, with the idea of promoting the films made in the countries of the Mediterranean area.
During the days of the festival you will have the opportunity to enjoy the films that will be screened in the official section, with the latest productions along with a series of thematic cycles. During this time, personalities from the Mediterranean film industry visit Valencia to present their work to the public and share their professional and artistic experiences. The Filmoteca, the Babel cinemas, the Palau de la Música and the Tossal gallery become the venues where the films are screened.
Another of the main objectives of the Mostra is to promote public interest in performances in Valencian and to improve the audience's knowledge and understanding of them, showing the best films of the year.
