Royal Shipyards

Address:
P. Juan Antonio Benlliure, Valencia 46011.

Itinerary: Poblats Maritims

Category: main star

The The old shipyard and warehouse are a magnificent sample of civil gothic architecture and they are located close to the harbour. They were built to bring the craft manufacturing, repairing and storehouse, consequently they played an important role in the maritime boom occurred in Valencia during the Middle-Age.

Built from 1377 on, the works elongated all over the XVth century and some renovations were made in the XVIth. Nowadays, only the central core remains. It is rectangular shaped and its surface is about 3,500m square. It Is composed by five longitudinal halls. Each of them is composed by nine arches with pointed contour made of bricks leaning on rectangular pillars. The halls are communicated one to the other by eight minor pointed arches. The roof is made of double -sided wood with bricks moving to outside. Particularly remarkable are the four limestone gutters embellished by the city coat of arms that give testimony of the municipal leadership of the building.

Throughout the XVIth century, they lost little by little their initial purpose as a shipyard and were used as a grain and gunnery storehouse as well as a reception placejor authority figures.

In 1802, the city lost its property when giving them to the Royal Treasury as a debt payment. In 1840, they were itemised and sold to private individuals.

The retrieval process of the building has launched from the moment it was pronounced Historical Monument in 1949.

Nowadays, after having been purchased again by the Municipal Council, they were restored and from 1994 they have been allocated to the Municipal Exhibition Hall.

Las Atarazanas are a beautifully-perserved symbol of 14th century Valencia’s maritime prominence, and were built by the ruling Moors. Today, they have been restored and serve as an cultural center.
